"Centuries old and housands of miles from home". When Emily and Jess Volnik's family inherits a remote, crumbling Scottish castle, they also inherit the Boggart - an invisible, mischievous spirit who's been playing tricks on residents of Castle Keep for generations. Then the Boggart is trapped in a rolltop desk and inadvertently shipped to the Volniks' home in Toronto, where nothing will ever be the same - for the Volniks or the Boggart.

In a world that doesn't believe in magic, the Boggart's pranks wreak havoc. And even the newfound joys of peanut butter and pizza and fudge sauce eventually wear thin for the Boggart. He wants to go home - but his only hope lies in a risky and daring blend of modern technology and ancient magic.

When the Scottish owner of Castle Keep died, the ancient castle went to his Canadian great-nephew, Robert Volnik. There was no way the Volniks could keep the castle, so it was sold to an Edinburgh lawyer, Mr Maconochie. Two years later, Emily Volnik and her younger brother Jessup return to the castle for a visit. To their delight, the Boggart, a mischievous shape-shifting spirit who has lived in the castle for centures, playing tricks on the owners, is still there, making Mr Mac doubt his sanity as strange things happen.

At Jessup's urging, Mr Mac takes them and Tommy Cameron, a local friend, on a camping trip to Loch Ness, Where a new expedition with advanced underwater equipment is planning another search for the Loch Ness Monster. The boggart comes along, and, on their first night there, he is entranced to rediscover Nessie, a boggart cousin who has long forgotten how to change shape and remains in the prehistoric-monster form he long ago adopted.

Once again, there's magic afoot in Scotland when Allie and Jay visit their grandfather and are eagerly greeted by the Boggart, an ancient sprite, and his cousin Nessie, formerly known as the Loch Ness Monster. Things are rarely peaceful with two boggarts around, but this time a real estate developer is the one causing a disturbance - a man named Trout.

Trout is building a luxury resort, and is desperate to buy up everything in town - including Allie and Jay's grandfather's shop. He's willing to do almost anything to raze the store to the ground, but with his beloved family under attack, the Boggart doesn't stay silent for long: soon bulldozers are mysteriously driving themselves into the loch, and surveying flags are floating off into the sky, but Trout is unmoved. When Nessie tries to scare him by transforming into the Loch Ness Monster, Trout is delighted - what a sensational tourist attraction he's found!

Allie, Jay, and the boggarts will have to use all of their wits to outsmart the developers and save their home - even if it means waking up all the Old Magic creatures. Even the deadly ones...
