Wintersmith is my favorite Tiffany Aching novel to date. In this one, straight laced Tiffany gets herself into trouble because she disobeys her current witch teacher and joins in a supernatural dance. Now some have criticized Mr. Prachett because they have claimed this was out of character for Tiffany, but I say these people have obviously never been or raised teenage girls. Even the best most well behaved of them do stupid and unpredictable things at times. I was a good kid, and one time I got upset and tore my room up.(My Mom still brings this up to me occasionally, and I'm 40 years old!) Now Mr. Pratchett has a daughter so he knows, that even someone as smart, and level headed as Tiffany is going to do a boneheaded teenage move at least once.(I suspect it has to do with hormones!)It just goes to show our little Tiffany is growing up.
Tiffany has to deal with other aspects of growing up like dating and sex. Now she has been raised on a farm so her frank knowledge of sex is some of the most hilarious scenes in the novel. The scenes where she was reading the romance novel just had me cracking up. As always Mr. Pratchett's satire is spot on. I'm looking forward to the next adventure of Tiffany as she grows and matures as a witch and a young woman.
