Synopsis
This novelette originally appeared in Asimov's Science Fiction, January 1998, and was reprinted on infintiy plus, November 2001. The story can also be found in the anthologies The Year's Best Science Fiction: Sixteenth Annual Collection (1999), edited by Gardner Dozois, Explorers: SF Adventures to Far Horizons (2000), edited by Gardner Dozois, and The Mammoth Book of Science Fiction (2002), edtied by Mike Ashley.
