Random quote: "Sometimes people are layered like that. There's something totally different underneath than what's on the surface. But sometimes, there's a third, even deeper level, and that one is the same as the top surface one. Like with pie." ~ Dr. Horrible - Joss Whedon et al. - (Added by: Administrator) |

Uber User Posts: 1465 Location: The Netherlands | Tantara - 2017-01-28 5:51 PM Also: Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand won the 2015 Shirley Jackson Award for Novella. Could it please be tagged as "Novella" in the database? People may then find it when searching for novellas for the novella-based challenge.
Also also: "Near Zennor" by Elizabeth Hand won the 2011 Shirley Jackson Award for Novella. It is not in the database, but both collections it was included in - A Book of Horrors, ed. by Stephen Jones, Jo Fletcher books, AND later Hand's own collection, Errantry: Strange Stories - are. I would love it if "Near Zennor" could be entered separately and tagged "novella", much as Ted Chiang's individual stories/novellas/novelettes are. (Another novella from the Errantry collection - The Maiden Flight of McCauley's Bellerophon - is already listed separately.) Thanks again! Near Zennor is in. I am working on the WFA at the moment and this story was nominated for one of those as well.

Note that the reason those stories are in the database is because they are all Hugo, Nebula, and/or Tiptree finalists or winners, not because they are Ted Chiang stories (which is why Bellerophon is already in the database as well).

Veteran Posts: 273 Location: behind the 4th wall | Also, The Suspended Heart by Heather Fowler. I checked on isfdb and only the author's anthologized short stories are listed but I am certain her collection of short stories qualifies for WWEnd. Thanks.

Uber User Posts: 857 Location: The Wilds of Washington | JessLibrarian - 2017-02-02 8:39 PM Could you add Sarah Pinborough's latest: Behind Her Eyes? Thanks for you time! From reading the description, I don't think this is something we'd list. It's Amazon page lists it in both the mystery and psychological thriller categories; not something we deal with. Please refer to the FAQ.

From reading the description, I don't think this is something we'd list. It's Amazon page lists it in both the mystery and psychological thriller categories; not something we deal with. Please refer to the FAQ. ISFDB hasn't listed this yet (they do show a bunch of genre works for Pinborough and 1 non-genre work). I looked into this out of curiosity, and there are a bunch of people on the internet whingeing and complaining about the fact that the "big surprise ending" is supernatural (they thought it should be realist). So I'm guessing that it does probably fall under WWEnd's domain. gallyangel - 2017-02-03 6:36 PM dalex - 2017-02-02 12:56 PM Also, The Suspended Heart by Heather Fowler. Is she sort of a Fabulist like Calvino? that sort of thing? Her author's bio describes her fiction as "fabulist", and the description for Submissions on the website of the publisher of this book says "We accept... magical realism and dystopic works" (among other things listed). So I'm guessing that yes, her writing runs along the same lines as Calvino and Borges. Based on the description of some of the stories, they would certainly qualify as speculative fiction (they include a robot, and a woman who grows a protective layer of razor blades on her skin).
