Random quote: I want to know why a fire glows, and why flame dust kills. I want my children or theirs...to know what makes this radio work,...and someday this rocket. I want to know much--more than I can learn, no doubt; but if I can start my people learning for themselves... -- Hal Clement (Mission of Gravity) - (Added by: Scott Laz) |

Member Posts: 43 Location: Chicago, IL | Adding a couple that I'm planning on reading for the Genre Non-Fiction RYO Challenge The Wonderful and Surprising History of Sweeney Todd by Robert L. Mack The Strange True Tale of Frankenstein's Creator Mary Shelley by Catherine Reef I couldn't find them in the isfdb, so I'm not sure if they qualify for indexing here, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

Naomi Sounds like powerful stuff but more historical fiction than historical fantasy. If you've read it and it does have fantastic elements in it, fine. It's just, from what I can see about it, that doesn't appear to be the case.

The Mary Shelley was a no-brainer. We discussed Sweeny Todd and I think since the good doctor (Hannibal Lecter) is in, that swayed it. I also included the original story as well.

It's just, from what I can see about it, that doesn't appear to be the case. It definitely seems to have some fantasy elements in it, and I'm only at the end of the first chapter so far. The setting is analogous with Elizabethan England, but instead of Queens Mary and Elizabeth we have Queens Maris and Bethany, there's a setup for a conflict between the 'old' religion (Eucharistian) and the 'new' religion, the main character refers to 'The Maker' instead of God, and so on. Even this early into the text I'm definitely getting a historical fantasy vibe, rather than straight historical fiction.

Uber User Posts: 1057 | finminer - 2020-07-28 7:22 AM Ray Aldridge is in the database with a few of his pieces, but here's a broader list Hi finminer, the 7 novels are eligible for entry into the database, but none of the short fiction works are eligible unless they were award finalists, appeared in one of the big "Best of" anthologies, or were published as standalone physical books. (For more info on what we add to the database, please see the FAQ, which is linked at the bottom of every page on this site.)
