Random quote: "I think that most of us, anyway, read these stories that we know are not "true" because we're hungry for another kind of truth: the mythic truth about human nature in general, the particular truth about those life-communities that define our own identity, and the most specific truth of all: our own self-story. Fiction, because it is not about someone who lived in the real world, always has the possibility of being about oneself. " - Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game) - (Added by: Emil) |

Uber User Posts: 263 Location: Gunnison, Colorado | The challenge is almost over, but Gene Wolfe has been added to the list. The SFWA press release is here: http://www.sfwa.org/2012/12/2012-damon-knight-memorial-grand-master-awarded-to-gene-wolfe/ Who should be next? My pick is C. J. Cherryh.

I was going to post it in the blog and here at lunch but opted to go eat delicious BBQ instead. He has been added to the list so if you're a speed reader you have a couple weeks to get him in under the wire. Anybody going to try? I think Cherryh would be an excellent choice. I wish they're go ahead and pick more than one a year. Some of these folks are getting up in age and they can't win posthumously. There does not seem to be any reason not to do it. Thoughts?

Uber User Posts: 263 Location: Gunnison, Colorado | Admin: Didn't mean to steal the thunder! I saw the announcement while eating my not-nearly-as-delicious-as-yours lunch at my desk. More people would see the announcement on the blog. I assume SFWA made the one-per-year rule in order to keep Grand Master status as a pretty exclusive group, but they could change it. One option might be to having year in which several people are named in order to catch up with the "backlog," then going back one per year until they again see the need for a bigger batch. But opening it up like that could lead to increased complaints about those not chosen. Under the current system, they have the perfect excuse for exclusions with the "we can only add on per year" policy.
