Biography
John Marks is the author of three novels and a work of non-fiction. His first novel, The Wall, was published by Riverhead Books in 1998 and was named a Notable Book that year by the New York Times. His second novel, War Torn, also published by Riverhead, came out in 2003 and was named one of the best of that year by Publishers Weekly. Fangland, his third novel, has been nominated for the World Fantasy Award and optioned for the movies by Hilary Swank. This year, Ecco/Harper Collins published his work of reporting and memoir, Reasons To Believe: One Man's Journey Among the Evangelicals and the Faith He Left Behind, which was named by Kirkus as one of the most important religion books of the year.
Marks is a former 60 Minutes producer. He also worked for US News and World Report in Berlin from 1990 to 1995 and was based in New York for the magazine between 1995 and 2000.
His documentary Purple State of Mind, co-produced with Craig Detweiler, won the award for Best Spiritual Film at the Breckenridge Film Festival.
Finally, and a little weirdly, he is featured by name as a character in Doug Wright's Pulitzer and Tony winning play I Am My Own Wife. While living in Berlin, Marks introduced Wright to the transvestite Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, who inspired him to write the play. The production ran on Broadway in 2004 and 2005.
