A more philosophical and theologically themed entry in Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion multiverse. This time, Captain von Bek, a soldier of fortune during one of Europe's many religious wars is given an opportunity at eternal redemption by Lucifer if he can find the source of the world's pain (human suffering). What follows is a grail quest of sorts into a fey world of menace and death, replete with discussions on the nature of good and evil, of Lucifer and of God. Not a work for everyone, but if you are interested in Moorcock's mulitverse (Elric, Corum, Count Brass, etc) it's a necessary read.
