New Watch

Once again Sergei Lukyanenko crafts a fascinating modern Russian parable in three acts with vampires and magicians. Anton Goredetsky remains a fascinatingly complex lead character with a very individual voice and a yearning to do good. The plot of the fifth book in the series is actually pretty low key with a lot of metaphysical and sociological ideas being addressed, questions about humanity and our intrinsic quixotic nature. Overall highly recommended though I'd advise this is not the best starting point as the drama is distinctly less exciting in this novel, though I do not consider this a bad thing as the ideas were all strong enough to carry it through. I'm looking forward to volume six, supposedly the last in the series.
