I enjoyed this books well enough. However, my enjoyment of it was diluted by the authors constant criticism of the horrible, horrible, present, where nothing good ever happened and all the people are bored and look the same, and his obvious pining for the glorious past, where people live happy lives and their faces are alive and different.
No, Mr Finney, actually life in the 1800's was hard and short and brutal for a great many people. Not once did I believe a 28-year-old-man from the 1980's would fit into that time period, or prefer it. We are creatures of our own time. We may believe we would be happier in another, but that is grass-is-greener syndrome, not reality.
