I thoroughly enjoyed this first book of a trilogy. Cherryh has an odd turn of phrase in all of her writings, but I found it less out of place in this book compared to Cyteen. I think that is because she is writing about two alien cultures (as well as a human one) that are not simply human knock-offs. The alien cultures are richly detailed and much of the plot revolves around one culture attempting to understand another's belief system- not always for positive reasons.
I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.
