Move over, Honor Harrington: there's a new girl in space. I picked this up as a library alternative to a cheap ebook and am amazed this didn't get a direct-to-physical-print. The writing is good, the pacing superb and the film possibilities limited by current special-effects wizardry. That, and who wants to star while dressed in a critter suit other than the former stars of the Linda Hamilton Beauty and the Beast? Okay, so, maybe Ron Perlman can be Rupert but the protagonist of Fortune's Pawn just can't be played by Sigourney Weaver. A better actress might be the blonde who played Nikita in the first round of TV but... time has passed on. I greatly enjoyed this space romp, perhaps the latest and, hopefully, part of a growing genre: hard Space Opera that has a nod to women who read SF. There's just so much vampire fiction and sparkly anybody can stand. Heading over to the library website to reserve the second book.
