I thought this second volume in the Serrano series was a distinct improvement over the first, Hunting Party, which I read last year. I thought the first was OK, but had I not bought the omnibus I might never have bothered to read any further. As it is, it still doesn't really spark, but I think I'm much more likely to read the third and finish the omnibus, at least.
Heris Serrano is a former military officer, forced out of the service under a cloud, who is now captain of a private yacht owned by a rich noblewoman.
Sporting Chance is about an attempt on the life of the owner, and the far-reaching consequences of that. It's a fairly enjoyable and straightforward tale, with suspense and drama, and a little less unlikely coincidence than Hunting Party.
More of a snack than a meal, but sometimes that's what you want.
