(From my review on GoodReads, March 2013)
Although it's a fairly straight-ahead young adult theme, I enjoyed the author's writing so much that I went to see what else she had written so I could read more. Unfortunately, the only things I could find were werewolf-themed books and I passed on those. This story was a bit different as it grew out of a legend not well known and/or trendy. It gave the author more leeway to create something unique and I appreciated that aspect of the read. I listened to it as an audiobook and enjoyed hearing some of the author's original music (partly because I'm a singer/songwriter myself, partly because it fit well into the context of the book) as well as the story and a message from the author about why she chose this particular direction and what it meant to her. All in all, quite a pleasant surprise.
I enjoyed her writing so much that I may end up reading those werewolf stories in spite of their theme. ;)
