I tried to read this, and tried to enjoy it. Sadly, even though I was willing to overlook the rather standard "heroic quest" narrative, the characterization of the protagonists was simply too inconsistent for me to even get a grip on who these people were and what they wanted. I got about 10% through the book (according to my Kindle) when the story took a wild left turn into a different story altogether, and I simply stopped caring to find out what happened next. Maybe I'm missing out on a great finale, but I feel like I've already wasted too much time on a story that needed heavier editing. Again, maybe the later books of the series improve in quality, but I can't recommend this one unless you have a lot of time to kill or don't mind skimming.
