This is an excellent Book One. I loved Brennan's charming prose, the way she laid out the foundations of this alternate world and the overall feel of the 19th Century. The theme: to treat Dragons as a Natural Historian would, is inspired and original. The story is also a reminder of how, in our own past (and still today), society strictly dictated the boundaries of someone's life, particularly when it came to scholarly pursuits. Not many women were as lucky as Mrs. Camherst was to escape those restrictions through a kind father and understanding husband. It's heartbreaking to think of all those stifled minds. I can't wait to gobble up the rest of this series as it documents Lady Trent's further expeditions.
