Not particularly exciting or engaging, the plot is pretty easy to predict and somewhat clumsy in construction, leaving lots of odd gaps in understanding and explanation.
The technology is now rather dated, though looking back at the time of writing and what was predicted for internet communcation and database access, it's pretty spot on.
The mystery of parentage will be solved by the typcial SF reader half way through the book, and Brunner goes out of his way to provide a shock ending that doesn't really make much sense given our understanding of IVF even when this story was written.
Only really for Brunner fans and completionists, as most will find it forgettable.
