Banks is the master of timeline. This early novel of his places him on a level above others when it comes to balancing the reader's curiosity about the past and desire to know the impending future.
The protagonist, Frank, is a young person with some serious mental issues. He does creepy and downright evil things, yet even before you know the truth about him you still can't help but pulling for him. The thing is, Frank might not even be the most disturbing character that you'll meet.
Banks' fictitious seaside Scottish town is absolutely living-colour-vivid, and his story is an all-time great. Quite simply, a must read.
