Hummingbird Salamander

A step down for Vandermeer. It's first person, which isn't necessarily bad, but the protagonist becomes obsessed so quickly, abandoning her entire life, her husband, her daughter, her job, that it's absurd, like an impetuous teen in a YA novel (a trope I can't stand). I almost DNF'ed it for that, and I NEVER do that. It is not so much about apocalypse as about a conspiracy that this person runs into.
