This is a big book, physically, and it's almost 700 pages. It is also rather slow and boring for hundreds of pages. This was a fairly hard book to get into, like really hard. It is just rather boring and full of politics and character development that is just not all that interesting. UNTIL the story starts and the protagonist shows up and we follow her life. The entire story is just intertwined genetic studies with politics and spying. It's almost like it's not SciFi at all, instead a political murder mystery "in space". I enjoyed the last half of the book, but getting there took months of trying to get into things. Once I finally got intested, 400 pages in, I finished the book in a week or so. Did I really like the book in the end? I don't think so, but I'm not sure. I do think I'll read the prequel on Gehenna, but I'm not sure if I care enough to read the sequel.
One more thing. How the heck did I make it through 680 pages of the book until it was made clear a "Platythere" was some sort of controllable semi-intelligent life form...?!?!?!!?...WTF, they were described like kids versions of bulldozers...
