Battlemage

For a start, the cover of this book did not appeal to me. Despite that I have decided to try and read it. The beginning was quite ordinary: the author started introducing main characters and initiated the plot. After reading half of the novel I have had a feeling that that the plot is still being initiated, I did not get a feeling that it is going towards any particular resoultion: war starts, king calls up gathering of wizards, warriors fight, wizards fight with the bad wizard, war goes on, there is a bit of assassination plot, war goes on, more magic is performed to battle the bad wizard, war goes on, some relationship drama, war goes on, some spy activities, fire balls are thrown, a bit of a view into worlds of some old earth-walking gods, war goes, fire balls, siege, friends are dying, war goes on and on and on... at the end the bad wizard is killed by the good wizard... And that is it. It could have not been more boring, tedious, linear, simple, without any twists. Even when I reached the last pages of the the book I still have had a feeling that Aryan is still trying to start the plot. Every now and then my impression of the book was that it was written for young adults or kids only starting to get into the world of fantasy literature. However descritpion of fights, gore, spilling guts, sex, vulgarisms made me wondering who is this book for: definietely not for kids. For adults? How can such a boring plot appeal to adults? Even the idea for a title is ridicolous: wizard that can only fight with magic? If they are so scholarly why cannot they come up with idea to use their levitation of fire commanding skills for civil purposes? And what is the purpose of Vargus in the plot? He is a soldier and he he fights. And fights. And fights. And it turns out he is somehow linked to old gods. And then introduction of old gods: accidental, purposeless, leading nowhere. This book does not make any sense as a whole. I dont understand its purpose. But it may be that it is only introduction to the secod book of this trilogy? I hope so.
