Mystery. Magicians. Classic films. Alternate realities. Feuding families. When I read the synopsis for Glass Town it immediately went on my To Read List. But it was a huge disappointment and not a book I would recommend to anyone.
O the misogyny! Ugh. Just ugh.
I wanted to love this book. I expected to get swept away to a 1920s London filled with a complex mystery and a heart rending love story. But...no. Instead, it's just about Josh, the protagonist, suddenly deciding he has to solve the mystery of this decade-long family feud. He has basically zero motivation for doing so and he's able to do so with ridiculous ease. The letter! The key! The map! He stumbles from one clue to the next in a matter of moments. No.
Josh is so one dimensional I did not care about him in the slightest. The mystery at the heart of the story is in the background so I really had no feeling whatsoever about why it was important at all. The pacing is frantic, there are very creepy man-made monsters (and even creepier sex), and did I mention the misogyny?
